I was born in Detroit MI to Rosalind and Dwight Dunlap on July 30 1970. My mom told me she knew I would be special because she was in labor with me for 19 hrs. I have one older brother name is Darin. I remember our little noisy 14th street on the West Side of Detroit.
We were very poor. My mom struggled to keep food on the table after my dad left us do to his alcohol addiction. I was only 4 years old alone without a father. My Grandmother Helen Young came to the rescue. She moved in with us And raised Darin and I while my mother went to school.
We didn't have much at all, infact i remember eating oatmeal and bread several days in a row. My grandmother did a great job by dressing up the oatmeal with apples and a little extra sugar in mine. My job was to scrub the kitchen and down the basement steps. I also had the trash detail every Tuesday. We always had to be in before the street lights came on so i would half do my chores to get out and play. like clockwork my grandma would come get me off the field and make me do my task all over. I still here her today as i now work from home. “Derek if you keep doing what you been doing, your going to get the same results weather their positive or negative”.I Quickly learn to do things right the first time. Any extra money my mom made went towards keeping my brother and me active in sports. My father came back into my life just in time for high school. I attended Ferndale high where i played four years of basketball and also was a disc jockey. I had no intention of living out my dads dream of being a pro basketball player. My mind was set on being the next Eddie Murphy or Michael Jackson.
The old Michael yawl the old Michael. I began to write and produce music landing a deal with polygram records in 1988 with my first hit Gangster funk. I was on my way, or at least i thought i was. Little did i know the 13,000 they gave me up front was to produce my album not buy a new car. A year later i was dropped from the label. I continued to write music along with school just incase the music couldn't provide. I got my associates degree in criminal justice along with a music minor from the recording institute of Detroit.
On may 14th 1994 I got a call from my mother stating they had a big add in the Detroit news hiring police officers. There was no way i was going to be a cop, no way! It was Monday morning and i was the third in line to apply for the Detroit police department who hadn't hired in 25 years. This was a huge event because of the police brutality and corruption that was going on within the department. People wanted a change. After 22 weeks of hell pure hell, i was a graduate of class 94c. 165 lbs soaking wet i was now patrolling the eastside of Detroit looking for trouble. You name it, i saw it. I fought everyday from domestic violence to armed robbers.... This went on for four long years.
..
On June 23 1998 my life changed forever I got into my first and last shoot out in front of a dope house that had more traffic than a McDonalds at noonday. I shot an armed man in the head who refused to drop his weapon. I remember looking down the barrel of his 357 mag loaded with cop killers. To this day i wonder what would have happened if i didn't pull my trigger first that night. I took the shooting real hard. the young man that was shot ended up a vegetable. I went out on stress leave for six months drowning my stress in beer and gambling. I was unable to return to the department because that knight never left my mind stated Dr Cruse From the D.M.C.
..Once again i was unemployed with my early 401k which was only 5,000. I needed work and i needed it fast. I found a small ad in the paper that stated “carpet shampooers wanted 400 dollars a week must have transportation“. Now this i could do and not have to fear my life and would put a little food on the table. I was the first in the fancy small room in Farmington hills Mi On Monday afternoon. This did not look like a carpet cleaning company at all. The carpet was a fancy array of colors along with top of the line furniture. A man with a sharp three piece suit entered the room and began what turned out to be a two hour sales pitch for Kirby vacuum. Now who in the hell in their right mine was going to sell a 2,400 dollar sweeper.
I was hired on the spot. I had nothing to lose what the hell. I ended up selling my first five sweepers and was the top new dealer that month. I worked my way up the ladder and on October 16 2000 i opened my own Kirby vacuum store. September 11th changed things for a lot of businesses . I was forced to close my store and once again sell door to door to pay the bills. While doing a presentation I remember a old white haired man name Joe cook asked me “ what the hell are you selling sweepers for, you should be working from home”.
I then stated “what do you mean Joe“. He then invited me over to his computer and showed me his online ebay store that worked for him 24hrs a day seven days a week and never complained. my mouth hung to the floor when i saw the power and leverage of the internet. I kept in touch with Joe who got me set up with my first Ebay store online. I Sold off all my old sweepers and made a extra 6,500 that month and have never wanted since my friend.
